Choose an idea that can be tested with little or no inventory, a small software bill and a customer you can reach directly. Your first target is not “passive income.” It is evidence that someone values the outcome.
Five models that can start lean
1. Productized service
Use AI to help deliver a repeatable service: research summaries, content repurposing, admin workflows, FAQ libraries, simple marketing assets or documentation. Sell the outcome, not the AI.
2. Digital product
Create a checklist, template pack, prompt system, worksheet or mini-guide for a narrow problem. Keep the first version small enough to finish and improve from customer feedback.
3. Curated buyer guide
Help a specific audience compare tools or choices. Monetization can later come from disclosed affiliate links, sponsorship or premium research—but trust must come first.
4. AI-assisted content service
Use AI for drafts and variations while keeping editing, fact-checking, brand voice and accountability human.
5. Simple utility
Before building a full SaaS, test the utility manually or with a spreadsheet/form. If people repeatedly use it, then consider software.
How to keep the first $100 of spending optional
- Use an existing website or free landing page.
- Use free tiers until a paid feature is tied to a real customer need.
- Avoid inventory until pre-orders or reliable demand justify it.
- Do direct outreach before buying advertising.
- Do not subscribe to five automation tools before the workflow has customers.
Choose with a simple scoring test
Rate the idea from 1–5 on six questions: Is the problem painful? Can you reach buyers? Do you have enough skill to deliver? Is startup cost low? Can you make a first sale quickly? Can the work repeat or scale?
Examples of narrow offers
- “I turn a small business's repeated customer questions into a reviewed FAQ response library.”
- “I create a reusable weekly content system for independent music teachers.”
- “I turn messy meeting notes into an action tracker and follow-up draft pack.”
- “I create a simple AI-use policy starter kit for a very small team.”
Your seven-day test
- Pick one customer group.
- Write one problem statement.
- Create one sample result.
- Show it to five potential customers.
- Ask what they currently do and what is frustrating.
- Offer a small paid pilot or pre-order.
- Decide from evidence: continue, change or stop.
